More Iranian Posters
I saw the Seattle-Iran Poster Show at Bumbershoot in 2008 and loved it. The way the graphic artists use the flowing script has always fascinated me. I bookmarked a web site related to that - http://www.todayposters.com/ - and recently noticed they had their 2009 awards announced.
My favorites from the winners and honorable mentions:
The second place winner (the image by Ali Seylan of Turkey) builds a large structure that looks like text with the sun signing across it and a blue sky back-drop giving it a larger sense of scale. The walls and floors of the structure have a micro-engraving pattern that looks like more text. The multiple levels of text give it a sense of hidden meaning.
Not reading the text makes me wonder if I'm missing much of the point. The 3rd place winner is pretty simple; the "font" is interesting. The way edges are cropped at 45 degrees, the right angles here and there standing out more, it has an interesting well thought out texture and feel.
This honourable mention entry (by Bahram Hamidi) has a brain twisting 3D complexity. The way the text wraps and flows in different directions is extremely cool, and the use of depth cues - shading and colors - to build impossible edges reminds me of Escher.
This honourable mention entry (by Shahin Afshari) builds an organic tree like structure out of some text repeated and offset up a stem or trunk. I love the use of the text and the building of a separate foreground object out of these repeated textual elements.
The Today Posters site is worth exploring - they put more art up in prior years so there are even more images to explore, and the use of the flowing text and the different styles are just amazing. Check it out!
