Video Game Skills Correlate To Success In Life

ZD-Net had a post titled "Skilled Video Gamers Have Bigger Brain Structures, More Success, Study Says." I knew all those years of obsessive button mashing would pay off!

Maybe I didn't really know that, and as they always say "correlation is not causation." Maybe people who are going to be successfull anyway are also succeeding in video games too, without video games really making any difference. Either way, video games are now pervasive and have been around long enough for studies like these to shed some light on the effects. I remember earlier claims that violent video games desensitized players to violence and left more violent behavior, although I can't recall if those were anecdotal reports (there were plenty of anecdotal reports of links over the years) or actual controlled and peer reviewed studies.

It's interesting how we change things around first, then spend a few decades figuring out what the effects of the changes are and trying to deal with any negative impacts. We're busy today cooking up new schemes and behaviors that lead to the problems of tomorrow - I like that theme.

Either way I hope my son doesn't notice that article or we'll never pry that Wii remote out of his hands
